This was supposed to be a normal AC maintenance visit in Naples.
I opened the outdoor condenser, removed the cover and checked the electrical compartment. That is when I found the problem: a small lizard had crawled inside and died right on the electrical components.
The homeowner had no idea it was there.
Why this happens in Naples
Living in Southwest Florida has its own AC problems. Outdoor units sit near bushes, mulch, walls, heat and humidity. Small lizards, frogs, insects and other pests crawl into the cabinet looking for shelter.
If they end up on a contactor, capacitor or wiring connection, they can create a short circuit or damage a part. Sometimes the system still runs for a while. Sometimes the homeowner only finds out when the AC stops cooling on a hot day.
What should be checked during AC maintenance?
A maintenance visit should be more than rinsing around the outside of the unit. The outdoor condenser should be opened and visually checked for:
- lizards, frogs, insects or debris inside the cabinet;
- loose, burned or damaged wires;
- contactor condition;
- capacitor condition;
- rust or corrosion;
- blocked airflow from bushes, leaves or dirt;
- signs of water, drain or moisture issues nearby.
The indoor air handler should also be checked when accessible. Drain issues, filter problems, weak airflow and visible moisture can all create problems in Naples homes.
Why a five-minute inspection matters
From the outside, the unit can look normal. The fan may run. The thermostat may respond. Cold air may still come out.
But inside the electrical compartment, a small issue can already be waiting. A quick inspection can help catch it before it becomes a no-cool emergency.
